The founder of so-called “progressive education,” he elaborated the uniquely American philosophical perspective of Pragmatism, with which our culture is so profoundly identified. What is this Pragmatism? What are its strengths? Its limitations? And how can we benefit from better understanding its contribution to our civilization? We will explore his thought and consider what enlightenment it has to offer us.

In our contemporary era of globalization, local communities often tend to be bypassed and neglected. Too often chain stores drive out local merchants, while only paying minimum wages and taking their profits elsewhere. At the same time, local taxes rise, services remain underfunded, and housing is both in short supply and overpriced. In this course, we will look at some current practical strategies that are successfully providing constructive alternatives to this process.
